10 Ways to Quit Smoking

There are as many ways to quit smoking as there are smokers. Finding the one that works for you can be a tedious process of trial and error.

To help you cut down on the process, consider keeping a smoker's diary. In it write down all the times that you smoke a cigarette, what you were doing and how you felt before smoking, what you feel prompted you to want the cigarette, etc. By compiling and then analyzing the information, you can gain valuable information about your smoking habit that will aid you in quitting.

Once you know this, then you can pick the way to quit smoking that will work best for you.

The following are 10 ways to quit smoking:

  1. Cold Turkey - probably the most tried method. This one is simply giving up cigarettes all at once with nothing to help ease the withdrawal symptoms. It will take about three days to kick the physical addiction, but it can take much longer the kick the mental addiction.
  2. NRT or Nicotine Replacement Therapy - this method of quitting smoking involves the use of an aid that releases nicotine into your body in a controlled manner. The nicotine patch and nicotine gum are two of the more popular types of this. NRT will prolong the physical addiction but it will lessen the intensity of the withdrawal symptoms.
  3. Hypnosis - Quitting smoking with the help of hypnosis is very popular right now. Hypnosis simply plants suggestions in your subconscious to make it easier for your conscious thought to quit smoking. It can also help you to relax during a normally stressful time.
  4. NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programing - NLP is a way to help you understand your behavior through mental and cognitive processes. you learn tools and skills to help improve yourself, or in this case to quit smoking.
  5. Magnets - There are magnets that you can buy to apply to a pressure point on your ear. This pressure point stimulates the recognition of "feel good chemicals" in your brain, making it easier to quit.
  6. Nicotine Inhibitors - There are prescription drugs out there that can block the nicotine from interacting with your body. This prevents you from feeling pleasurable after smoking a cigarette. Without this feeling, it is supposed to be easier to quit.
  7. Antagonist drugs - These are drugs that make you feel sick whenever you smoke a cigarette. Electric shock therapy has also been used in a similar manner.
  8. Herbal cigarette - There are types of herbal cigarettes out there that mimic tobacco cigarettes in smell and feel. They don't have nicotine or many of the other harmful chemicals that tobacco cigarettes do though. While you will be reducing the harmful effects of your smoking, you will still have a smoking habit.
  9. Support groups - Sometimes it helps to talk to someone who is in or has been in your shoes. There are support groups that you can join and a support line that you can call to talk to someone who can help you through the difficult times.
  10. Reduction method - This involves quitting smoking gradually by reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke in a day. Then you can further reduce by only smoking half of a cigarette at a time. Keep reducing the amount you smoke until you are cigarette free.

No one method is better than the other. Its a matter of finding the method that works best for you. And all of the methods have one thing in common: the single most important factor in quitting smoking successfully is your level of determination.
