7 Tips For Preventing Skin Irritation

If you are the kind of person whose skin gets irritated by things like ingredients in cosmetics and chemicals in detergents or soap, then you might want to include the following recommendations in your sensitive skin care regimen.

  • Wear clothing made from cotton and other natural fabrics that "breathe." If you need to wear synthetics, make sure you wash them several times to minimize the risk of skin irritation.
  • Do you do laundry or wash dishes the old-fashioned way? Then protect your hands from chemicals in cleaning agents by using wash gloves. Consider also using cotton liners inside your gloves (since the rubber can irritate your skin).
  • Shaving can be a hassle for people with sensitive skin. No matter which part of your body you shave -- your face, legs, armpits, bikini area -- you should always make sure you use a sharp razor because a blade that is dull will not only give a bad shave, it will irritate your skin as well. Shave in slow, smooth motions, and remember to always keep the relevant skin area well lathered.
  • Facial skin can be more sensitive than the skin on other parts of your body, so it's best to avoid using anything that can irritate it, including make-up. But if you really must, then apply only a thin layer -- don't go overboard. Also, never forget to remove your make-up before you go to bed.
  • If you have a habit of touching your face every now and then, stop. You're just exposing it to even more to any dirt and oils that are on your fingers. To wipe off that sheen of perspiration or oil on your face, use a soft, clean cloth or facial tissue.
  • It's important to keep your sensitive skin clean, but don't overdo it. Bathing or washing too often in one day -- more than twice -- can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it more susceptible to irritation.
  • Don't believe that products labeled "formulated for sensitive skin" are totally safe for you to use. Many of these so-called sensitive skin care products contain seemingly harmless ingredients like mineral oil or fragrance, which can actually cause your skin to break out. Make sure that the skin cream, gel, lotion, or moisturizer you buy for your face and body is non-comedogenic and fragrance-free.
